The Art of Writing an Herbal Formula  (Its Pure Intent)

Drawing of amalki herbWhat is this? What does it mean? What I have always done with my patients is to write as specific a formula for them which will address every aspect of their unique bodily situation. And, I modify their formula over time, as the landscape of their physiology/psychology changes in the course of treatment.

I have done this with herbs, both Western and Ayurvedic, long before even graduating from Oriental Medical College. Although I work with a company that specializes in Chinese herbal formulas, I have always been eclectic and will add or substitute other herbs in order to fully satisfy my patient’s needs.Drawing of guggul herb

As a student, I always very much respected the ability of any practitioner with whom I was studying to write a sensitive formula for a patient. Another aspect of this ability to write effective formulas is the intent. This intent is called Sankalpa In Sanskrit. It’s an energetic tropism or directionality for the patient. That is to say, it’s not just about the herbs in a formula, as specific as they might be, but there’s also an energy exclusive of the herbs which addresses the core healing of the person.

To your good health,
Andrew
